INTRODUCTION - Exclusive to LPS

The notorious London Dungeon is the location for the first in a series of special charity fundraisers, in aid of TheatreMAD.

GHOST HUNTING WITH CASTS OF THE WEST END is a totally unique charity event giving you the chance to hunt for spooks with the cast of your favourite west end shows, whilst raising important funds for the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Join the cast of WICKED, as we get wicked, and switch off the lights in the haunted London Dungeon for an evening of defying gravity and other phenomena. Sometimes described as a museum of historical horror, and recalling events and atrocities from the past, is it not recommended for those with a nervous disposition.

THE CHARITY

TheatreMAD is the committed response from the British theatre community and its audiences. We draw upon its talents, resources and generosity through exciting events to raise money and awareness to help people affected by HIV and AIDS and other critical illnesses.

LONDON DUNGEON HISTORY

In 1212, a hospital, run by Augustinian monks and nuns who provided treatment for the poor, sick and homeless and dedicated to Thomas Becket stood on the site of the dungeons. The footprint of the hospitals cemetery borders the site and occasionally spits out the occasional skeleton during building works. The area was the perfect place for the ecclesiastical to set up their City dwellings.

Contrary to belief and much speculation about the horror atrocities and various exhibitions associated in the Dungeon, it seems there is more to the man made sets than first anticipated. In 1542, a pillory, stocks and cage stood on the site of the dungeon, which is spookily recreated in the Torture area. In keeping with the Fire of London exhibit, Southwark was witness to two ravishing fires akin to the great fire itself. Plague Street seems to also reflect serious outbreaks which destroyed locals during the 16th and 17th century. Even the mysterious mirror maze exhibit, reflects the maze which stood nearby during the 1500’s. To this day clues can be found in nearby Maze Pond Street, putting to bed the rumour which insists the dungeon and its exhibits have no connection to the site.

By the 17th century the area had become a popular place for alternative entertainment. Dog, bear and cock fighting, binge drinking were all to be found in the many local taverns. Tooley Street (originally called St Olaves Street) and gained a reputation for being an infamous red light district. In 1838, London Bridge station was built therefore creating a series of arches. During the WWII, the arches were used as air raid shelters by many of the residents of the nearby tenements’. On February 17 1941, the arches received a direct hit by a bombing raid killing 68 local people who were spending the night it is believed that many of the bodies were never recovered and still remain entombed to this very day.

LONDON DUNGEON - PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

Ask any one of the buildings employees, and they will inform you the dungeons are full of supposed paranormal activity. Beyond the mutilated dummies, torture equipment and dark corridors are multiple reports of children in the plague area, to silent figure’s appearing between the dummies in the mortuary or gliding around the Great Fire exhibit. General poltergeist activity is encountered when doors rattle, open and close whilst knocks and raps are heard, especially in the Jack the Ripper area. Previous investigations have uncovered much auditory phenomena, and many of the investigators were spooked in the world’s largest mirror maze as strange mists, dragging footsteps and clanking of chains have been experienced.

The dungeon is a regular and favorite location for LPS, and the nights have never proved disappointing. Not many people get the chance to experience the dungeon after closing time, with an atmosphere that chills you to the bone. Are you ready?
