INTRODUCTION

Ghost hunting with London Paranormal prides itself for researching and obtaining new and exciting haunted properties, all of which are said to harbour previously un-released ghost stories. Between 2006 and 2008, we have introduced 10 new haunted properties into the paranormal event circuit. Landguard Fort is one of these locations.

Battle of the Haunted Forts is an extensive paranormal study throughout May at four of the country’s best maritime strongholds. Launching at Landguard Fort on 2nd May, we visit Harwich Fort on 9th May, Coalhouse Fort on Saturday 16th May and culminating at the notorious Secret Amherst Fort on Saturday 23rd May, this truly unique event will uncover which Fort is the most haunted.

Landguard Fort is large, menacing and built to intimidate; this unique find will not disappoint. Experience the labyrinth of tunnels, the old gaol, and many period rooms. A marathon package to attend all four forts is available. Join us on this legendary journey.

HISTORY

Built just outside Felixstowe, Suffolk at the mouth of the River Orwell, Landguard Fort was designed to guard the entrance to Harwich. The first fortifications from 1540 were a few earthworks and blockhouse, but it was James I of England who ordered the construction.

In 1667 the Dutch landed a force of 1500 men on Felixstowe beach and advanced on the fort, but were repulsed by Nathaniel Darrell and his garrison of 400 musketeers and 100 artillerymen with 54 cannon.

A new battery was built in 1716, and a complete new fort on an adjoining site was started in 1745 to a pentagonal bastioned trace. New batteries were built in the 1750s and 1780s, but the biggest change was in the 1870s where the interior barracks were rebuilt. Beneath the casemates and gun positions are the magazines, a labyrinth of passageways, shell, powder and cartridge stores.

During the Second World War, it was used as one of the balloon launch sites of Operation Outward. Since then the fort has seen many changes during its time under military control up to 1956, when the army finally marched out.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

With over 500 years of habitation, invasion and death, it comes as no surprise that this location is haunted and witness to a plethora of paranormal activity in or around the fort.

The ghost of a soldier was witnessed immediately after his death, terrifying his fellow colleagues. Is this unfortunate man responsible for the most recent and regular sightings at the fort?  The image of a sailor has also been seen looking out of the top right window (the side visible from the road).

A Musketeer is another resident ghost who was said to be the only soldier killed in the battle when the Dutch attacked the fort in 1667 during the last invasion of England by a foreign force. He only seems to appear when the country is in danger - and appeared several times during the Second World War, seen walking around during sea mist.

Another regular haunting at Landguard replays the death of a Portuguese woman who was driven so insane by her soldier husband’s death by firing squad in 1757, that she committed suicide by throwing herself off the ramparts.

One particular ghost legend has been associated with the fort since 1770. It recalls the unfortunate victim of an infectious plague who was locked in the bastion and left to die a slow, a horrible death.

Phantom marching has been heard heading towards the fort and recent LPS events encountered intelligent knocking, white mists in human form, an apparition of someone falling from battlements, archs of light anomalies and several reports of being pushed.
