INTRODUCTION

London Paranormal joins forces with the annual Mystic Arts Festival at the notoriously haunted Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, Essex. Synonymous for its endless ghost sightings, terrifying tunnels and aggressive ghostly interaction, the fort's reputation for paranormal activity never ceases to disappoint. Most Haunted recently encountered an alleged violent negative entity and intense poltergeist phenomena. If you scare easy, think twice about attending.

HISTORY

The area of the Essex coast on which Coalhouse Fort stands today has been strategically important as far back as the Iron Age. Throughout the millennia, the site has been fortified in many incarnations. In 1540, 15 cannon blockhouses were built at Coalhouse Point by Henry VIII.

Coalhouse Fort is a Victorian coastal defence fort set in parkland next to the river Thames at East Tilbury, Essex. Completed in 1874, the site was built upon previous gun batteries, to defend the approaches to London from the threat of invasion from France. It is one of many such forts and batteries built in response to the recommendations of a Royal Commission of 1860. Over the years many of these forts have been demolished or radically altered but Coalhouse, although modified to take more modern armament, has kept much of its original architectural form. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of an armoured casemated fort in the United Kingdom.

The fort continued its role as a military establishment through two world wars although with the development of longer range artillery, its function in defending the approach to the capital had become secondary by World War II. In 1962 the fort and surrounding works were sold to Thurrock Council.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

A popular location for many fellow paranormal groups, the Fort’s paranormal activity has undergone intense investigation over the years, most of the reports recall amazing similarities. The core of phenomena seems to centre on the vast underground tunnels where gliding shadows, sudden temperature changes and full bodied apparitions are all reported in regular occurrence. Smells of Lavender, intense claustrophobia and auditory phenomena are also prevalent within the building infrastructure. Most recently Most Haunted encountered intense activity and an overpowering negative entity, when it filmed at the fort for Series 10.
