THE MURDER MONTH OF MAY:  FORT AMHERST TUNNELS GHOST WATCH

Throughout the month of May, we explore various murders and murderers associated with haunted locations.   This particular location with its daunting underground tunnel system hides a murder within is history.  In 1834, Sergeant Freely was shot on the parade ground by Private Gardner. The intoxicated Private was found guilty and hanged on the Lines in front of the entire Garrison. The tunnels are full of terrifying ghosts but one male phantom is known to be aggressive to other soldiers. Is this the spectre of the Private seeking revenge on his execution?

PSYCHIC WORKSHOP: We will also be running a ABC Psychic development workshop at the Fort during the afternoon prior the Ghost Watch.  Joint tickets available

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

This immense dark tunnel system is literally stuffed to the brim with paranormal stories and apparitions. In the Air Raid Control room, a tall dark man in Victorian clothing has been seen, as the temperature dramatically drops. This apparition appears with no feet.  Workman in the area has witnessed 2 sand filled fire buckets drag themselves across the floor. A Napoleonic drummer boy is said to run up the tunnels and hit you on the back of your legs. In the Dene Hole, a sobbing woman has been witnessed, alongside the smell of Lily Of The Valley, whilst a sentry has materialised out of thin air by the Lower Sally Port staircase. The Fort is also home several menacing entities. In the lower Gun Floor, a soldier is unfriendly to those rude or offensive to women, and in the Upper Gun Floor another pushes people. The Guard House is a place no-one wants to go alone, because it is said to house the violent ghost of an angry man. Wearing a bloodstained shirt, his apparition has been seen rushing towards people before vanishing into thin air. He is also said to be responsible for snatching torches out of people’s hands. This malevolent entity has a strong dislike to soldiers, forcing some people to feel very uncomfortable and sick. Recently, two public members were allegedly dragged upstairs towards the exit by an invisible force. It seems Fort Amherst has a presence which is trying to keep people out, or possibly worse, trying to keep something in!

HISTORY

Built in 1756, Fort Amherst is Britain’s best surviving example of a Napoleonic Fortress whose main aim was to protect the Royal Dockyard at Chatham. Originally over three kilometres in length, it enclosed the dockyard and village of Bromton.  In comparison to other forts of the period, the difference is the extensive underground tunnel system (built between 1776 and 1805) linking many areas of the fort which would provide protection in the event of a siege. At its peak the garrison had a complement of 125 guns. Fort Amherst was not modified during Victorian times and is therefore probably the best surviving example of Georgian military architecture. The fort was declared defensively obsolete in 1820, annual training exercises called the Great Siege Operations were held at the fort up until the early 1900s. The protection offered by the tunnel system led to their use during WW II as the local Civil Defence HQ and by the anti invasion planning unit. There is a reconstruction of the Civil Defence control room as it was in 1940. It was finally vacated by the Civil Defence in 1956. The site was purchased from the M.O.D by Fort Amherst & Lines Trust in 1980 and opened to the public a couple of years later.
